Progressive Socialist Party Reaffirms Stance on Syria Unity, Addresses Suwayda Accountability

The Progressive Socialist Party has reasserted the consistency of its political position alongside the Democratic Meeting parliamentary bloc, grounding its approach to Syrian affairs in fundamental principles centered on opposing division, maintaining Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and rejecting any arrangement based on sectarian alliances.

According to a statement from the party's Information Commission, Representative Taymour Jumblatt has underscored the alignment between party leadership and its parliamentary caucus. This cohesion, the commission noted, reflects enduring principles established since the party's inception, with particular emphasis on safeguarding Lebanon's national unity, resisting fragmentation schemes, and reinforcing Arab identity.

The party extended these foundational principles to its framework for addressing Syrian matters, prioritizing Syria's territorial cohesion and sovereignty while protecting its diverse components and resisting efforts to instrumentalize sectarian elements for Israeli strategic interests.

Addressing what it characterized as unfounded claims that the party remained silent regarding the first anniversary of the Suwayda incidents, the party's statement highlighted that the Democratic Meeting, following its gathering led by Taymour Jumblatt on July 11, had emphasized the imperative of advancing judicial processes, ensuring accountability for all responsible parties, expediting the liberation of those held captive, and pursuing implementation of the Amman-signed framework in ways that safeguard Syria's integrity and stability. The statement also referenced plans for a comprehensive development initiative in Suwayda.

The party traced this position to declarations made by Walid Jumblatt during an extraordinary session of the Sectarian Council on July 18, 2025, when he advocated for establishing a fact-finding committee to examine all documented abuses. He proposed a structured approach beginning with judicial accountability, characterizing justice as the foundation enabling authentic dialogue and eventual reconciliation among Suwayda's residents, other Syrian communities, and state institutions.

The party emphasized its early advocacy for an impartial international investigation, including direct engagement with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk, and Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, head of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria.

The international investigation's subsequent report generated controversy when it identified Israeli involvement in escalating tensions and intensifying violence, the statement noted.

Domestically, Syrian authorities have detained officials from state agencies and launched inquiries encompassing more than 800 individuals suspected of involvement in killings and violations. The statement confirmed that public proceedings will commence against those substantiated as perpetrators of crimes targeting civilians in Suwayda Governorate during the July 2025 events.
